They also have less history of doing so. These are incontrovertible facts that render hollow the yowling demands that the racism of blacks be accorded a place in the national consciousness commensurate with that of white people.

So when you find a black bigot, feel free to censure and ostracize him or her as the circumstance warrants. I don’t care. Just don’t pretend the transgression is what it is not. Don’t claim it represents a significant threat to the quality of life of white Americans at large. Because if it represents such a threat, then where are the statistics demonstrating how black bias against whites translates to the mass denial of housing, bank loans, education, employment opportunities, voting rights, medical care or justice?

And please, spare me the anecdote about Jane, who couldn’t get into school or Joe, who lost his job because of affirmative action. Not the same. Not even close. There are, in fact, reams of statistics documenting that racism has fostered generation after generation of Joes and Janes — not to mention Jamillas, Rasheeds and Keshias — in the African-American community. And those numbers come not from the NAACP, the Nation of Islam, the Congressional Black Caucus or any other group with an ax to grind but, rather, from the federal government and from university think tanks.

Yet even with those bona fides, some people find evidence of white racism’s power dishearteningly easy to ignore.They have to, I suppose. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to continue pretending an equivalency that does not exist.

Whenever anyone goes, “What about the Irish?” it’s always telling that it’s pulled out to silence people talking about Black suffering.

But if you cared about Irish slavery, poverty, race riots or being driven out of town, wouldn’t the next logical step be to say, “So let’s make sure NO ONE suffers this shit, any where, any time, again?” and have empathy for everyone else who has?

Of course, by saying it only to silence other people talking about suffering, you’re showing you don’t care about the Irish or the Blacks, in fact you’re just using one group’s suffering as a cheap rhetorical trick to reinforce white supremacy and your hatred of Black folks, as if there’s a limited amount of empathy in the world and god forbid Black people get any of it.

TIWP is a space for ALL POC, but so far I keep seeing the suffering of Irish folks being brought up to “contradict” the oppression of black peeps

Ruby Rhod is one of my favorite characters in sci-fi ever because he is Luc Besson’s vision of the hetero sex symbol of the future: a flamboyant, emotionally labile man who wears skin-tight leopard print or decks himself in roses, a man who accessorizes with big jewelry and dabbles in cosmetics. And the ladies love him. Everything about him screams “gay” according to our stereotypes, but he’s portrayed as a 100% straight sexual dynamo.

Besson is one of the few directors I’ve seen who actually recognizes that our ideas of sexuality and gender performance might have changed drastically in the future.

Be sure to look out for the Moon these next few months as it approaches Perigee, because the full moons during these times will appear exceptionally large. The Moon will be at its Perigee, or closest approach, in July 23 and it will reach full moon only a few minutes after it passes this point in its orbit.

These ‘super moons’ not only appear larger because they are physically closer but, combined with a full moon, the mind can play tricks on you to think they are much larger. This phenomena is called the Moon Illusion. Try to catch these full moons as they rise/set because the illusion works when there is an object in the foreground, like a tree, building or mountains.
